What is sports dentistry?
Sports dentistry is a branch of dentistry and gnathology that prevents trauma to the masticatory system (teeth, muscles, bones and nerves) in sports, amateur or competitive activities.
It prevents injuries and improves performance.

The functions of the sports dentist
Scientific studies show how the condition of athletes' oral cavity can affect their performance during activity.
It is important to check early on as children, if anatomy and function are in line with health status and do not present problems. This allows rapid remedial intervention that ensures orderly growth, avoiding intervention in adolescence or adulthood.
It is possible to intervene and resolve at any age stage.
Sports dentistry:
Prevents and treats orofacial trauma;
prevents and treats overload injuries and wear and tear of the musculoskeletal system;
improves performance in contact sports;
improves muscle reactivity.
The Bite
The splint is a device made of biocompatible material (resins or silicone) tailored to the person (custom-made) that allows the correction of mouth closure, seeking the "therapeutic position," that is, the optimal situation in which performance is increased and the risk of injury is decreased.
Types of splints
performance splint: increases sports performance, for use during training and competitive activities;
relaxation splint: decontracting and relaxing action on the muscles of the upper body, to be used mainly during night rest, improving it;
protective bite: to prevent trauma to the teeth during more risky competitive contact activities (e.g., rugby, American football, boxing, etc.).
Splints can be made for the upper and lower arch.
We give preference to lower arch splints because:
they are more comfortable;
they interfere less with diction;
they are less visible.
Often the benefit of the bite is immediate. Sometimes it is not noticeable right away.
The stages of the pathway
Visit and data collection
Radiographs are taken in the office, fingerprints are taken, and photographs are taken. Major masticatory muscles, joint, and body and foot posture are examined (posturometer and podoscope). Snoring (polysonography) and grinding (brux checker) are checked. Joint function is examined (condylography) and, if necessary, a joint MRI is performed at a specific diagnostic center.
1
Treatment plan
Once the critical issues are highlighted, a treatment plan is drawn up, which often involves the use of specific splints, customized dental devices, which can be either remedial or "buffering." In other cases, multidisciplinary treatments are needed, involving different professionals, such as osteopath, dietitian, etc., to implement a treatment plan that involves several coordinated and complementary interventions.
3
Diagnosis
Data collection will reveal whether the masticatory system impacts musculoskeletal function and what treatments are most appropriate to implement to resolve any problems encountered.
2
Follow-up visit
During the follow-up visit, set goals are monitored: checking general well-being, neuromuscular balance, and expected outcomes. Visits should be scheduled for at least 4 to 5 months, time to understand whether the changes/adaptations are continuing properly.
