What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is a screw, made of titanium or zirconia, that is inserted into the bone and has the same function as the tooth root. A prosthesis, whether removable or fixed, total, partial or single, is then screwed or cemented onto the implant.

What is the purpose?
The purpose of a dental implant is to occupy the space vacated by one or more missing or extracted teeth, restoring lost chewing function andfacial aesthetics.
Even the absence of a single tooth causes chewing, phonetic, postural, and aesthetic problems because adjacent teeth shift, occupying the space found vacant.
The dental implant restores the mouth to its original situation, often improving it. It also restores function to the bone, preventing further bone loss.
What is immediate loading implantology?
In a single session of about 3 hours, it is possible to extract teeth (if necessary), insert implants and temporary fixed teeth. This optimizes the procedure, decreasing pain in the postoperative period, quickly achieving the expected result, and avoiding functional and aesthetic problems.
In some cases after surgery, it is necessary to wait 2 to 3 days for the insertion of temporary fixed teeth.
It is a treatment evaluated with the doctor based on the quantity and quality of the bone, determined by 3D CT scan.
In cases where the bone is not compatible with immediate loading, bone regeneration techniques or other types of implants (zygomatic and/or pterygoid) are used.

What are the types of treatment
Single tooth
A single implant to support the crown, instead of making a bridge that involves working on two neighboring teeth.
Bridge over implants
When several teeth are missing, a bridge can be made, that is, fixing implants in strategic places and making the missing fixed teeth. This is a solution that allows the teeth to be restored with fewer implants than the actual missing teeth, while also avoiding the need to work on healthy teeth.
All on four/All on six (Toronto bridge)
When all the teeth in an arch (or both arches) are missing or when teeth are severely compromised, 4 or 6 implants can be placed with an immediate loading procedure to create a solid base for the prosthesis that will replace the entire arch.
The prosthesis, which is temporary but fixed, serves to consolidate the implant into the bone, locking and supporting it. During the settlement period (about 3 months), bone and gum tissue changes occur, and the provisional allows us to facilitate and integrate them.
Overdenture
This is a removable prosthesis, which is removed daily for proper oral cleaning and hygiene of the mouth. It is attached with buttons or bars to the implant for greater stability, avoiding the daily use of adhesives.
One can use the existing prosthesis (the denture in use) or make a new one.

The stages of the pathway
The implantology visit
The examination is used to understand whether and what type of implant can be used. Radiological examinations, CT scans, 3D scans are performed, using the modern technological tools at our disposal. Only after the visit are the treatment steps defined.

Healing and osseointegration (integration of the implant with the bone)
After 2 months, radiographs are taken to assess implant integration and oral health status. After 3 to 4 months after implant placement, when integration is complete, you are ready for impressions, either analog or digital.

Checking the status of implants and prostheses
At least once a year, it is necessary to undergo a checkup, a true "coupon."
X-rays to assess the state of bone health around the implants;
congruity and accuracy of the prostheses;
check of the screwing of the prostheses.
With the passage of time and masticatory load, it is possible for the screws to loosen, feeling a slight movement of the crown. It can happen; simply notify us for prompt action.

Intervention and treatment
Teeth can be extracted, implants and dentures inserted in the same session, ensuring tissue, bone and gum healing at the same time as implant integration. In this way, one is not left without teeth and maintains the aesthetics of the smile. The only recommendation is to chew soft foods for a period of about 2 months, the time needed for the implants to integrate. If the immediate loading technique cannot be applied, the traditional method is used, and after implant placement, wait for full integration (3 to 4 months) before proceeding with dentures. If bone is missing, bone regeneration techniques or other types of implants(zygomatic and/or pterygoid) can be used.

Insertion of the prosthesis
The prostheses can be made of resin polymers, zirconia, and ceramics, all of which are biocompatible and metal-free materials. They are attached to the implant with screws or cements. After the first 15 days after insertion, a general checkup is performed and then a hygiene session is scheduled and a further checkup within 3 to 4 months.

Oral hygiene sessions
Keeping dentures clean means learning how to use specific tools. During the oral hygiene session, the hygienist gives the correct instructions, which can then be followed at home. At least 2 oral hygiene sessions per year are recommended.
