Dental Hygiene in Children: When Should You Start?

Many parents wonder when to start brushing their children's teeth. The answer is: right away!

From Birth to Age 3

Even before baby teeth appear, it’s important to gently clean your baby’s gums with a moistened sterile gauze. Once the first tooth erupts, you can start using a soft-bristled toothbrush and a small amount of fluoride toothpaste.

From Age 3 to 6

At this stage, children begin to develop some independence, but it’s essential that parents always supervise toothbrushing, twice a day, for at least 2 minutes.

The Benefits of Oral Hygiene in Children

1. Cavity Prevention

Cavities in children are very common and can cause pain, infections, and difficulty chewing. Proper oral hygiene, combined with regular dental check-ups, helps prevent them effectively.

2. Proper Dental Development

A healthy mouth supports the correct alignment of teeth and the development of the jaw bones. It also reduces the risk of orthodontic issues during adolescence.

3. Health Education

Teaching children to take care of their teeth also means educating them about responsibility and independence, while promoting a healthy lifestyle.

How to Maintain Good Oral Hygiene in Children

  • Brush teeth at least twice a day, in the morning and at night

  • Use an age-appropriate toothbrush and replace it every 2–3 months

  • Use fluoride toothpaste in the correct amount

  • Limit the intake of sugary foods and drinks

  • Schedule regular visits with a pediatric dentist
